To Kill A Mockingbird

Main Characters

Picture
Jean Louise "Scout" Finch is the narrator of the story.  She is a six year old girl who tells about her life and an event that happened when she was young.  She is always being harassed by other females, like her aunt for being so tomboyish and not being a young lady. She is very smart for being six years old but still gets into fights.  Her and Dill Harris are "in love" so they say. She can be described as a round character because, she really matures throughout the book but then still carries some of her childish ways.

Atticus Finch is the father of Scout and Jem.  He is a very polite and reserved man.  He always keeps his composure and respects others.  Atticus is a wonderful father, even though his sister Alexandria does not agree with his parenting skills.  He is always honest and patient with his children and barely ever gets angry.  He is a respected lawyer in his little town.  He teaches his children to respect the colored because they are equal to us.  During the book he defends a colored man and loses because of race even though it was very unfair.

Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch is the older brother of Scout.  Jem is much like his father very quiet and more reserved.  He is almost the total opposite of his sister, Scout.  He always has high expectations for people and when they let him down and don't meet them expectations he has a hard time getting over it.  Jem is always respectful of other people and their feelings.  Throughout the book he really matures and understands more about the world around him.  In the end he turns out to be on his way to being a very good man.  He can be described as a round character, because he can be a gentle but then agressive person and he has a lot of different traits that come out in the book.

Charlers Baker "Dill" Harris is a young boy who lives next door to Scout and Jem in the summertime when he visits his aunt.  He is Scout's "boyfriend" in the book.  He is a very crazy character and always getting into some kind of trouble.  He is proud that he can read and seems to be a bit intelligent.  He is one of Jem's best friends in the book.

Calpurnia is the housekeeper and cook for the family.  Atticus loves how she does not spoil the kids like other housekeepers do.  She is a strict woman with good intentions for Scout and Jem.  She basically plays the motherly role in the house, since their mother died.  Calpurnia is one of the few colored people in the book who can read and write.

Tom Robinson is the man who was charged with raping Mayella Ewell.  Atticus is his attorney in the book.  Tom is a good friend of Calpurnia.  He was truely a good man, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  During his trial he was found guilty and sentenced to prision where he tried to escape and was shot.

Arthur "Boo" Radley is a mysterious character in the book who the children are dying to catch a glimpse of.  His father keeps him locked up in the house because he got into a bit of trouble.  The children are obsessed with making him come out.  One day they find treasures in a tree near the Radley house and each day there is something different.  The children are curious of who is putting these gifts there.  One day they write a thank you note to put in the hole of the tree but, they find that someone has cemented up the hole.  Jem, Scout, and Dill are sure that Boo was leaving the gifts.  Boo has a very strong presence in the book even though they only see him at the end of the book.  Boo also saves the children from Mr. Ewell who trys to kill them, and becomes a hero.
